We are pleased to share several updates from the Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology with the SNACC membership!
SNACC Clinical Guidelines and Consensus Statements
All documents are free to view on the JNA website here. We direct SNACC Members to the recent update to the Perioperative Care of Patients at High Risk for Stroke After Non-Cardiac Non-Neurologic Surgery (Vlisides PE, Moore LE, Whalin MK, Robicsek SA, Gelb AW, Lele AV, Mashour GA. JNA 32 (3): 210-226).
SNACC 2020 Annual Meeting Abstracts
All abstracts from the SNACC 2020 Annual Meeting are now available on the JNA website here. The breadth and quality of the abstracts this year was exceptional, and we encourage all SNACC members to read them.
Featured JNA Content
Editor-in-Chief Dr. Martin Smith has highlighted several articles in the next issue of JNA. Look out for these articles in the upcoming Editor’s Choice in the January issue of JNA:
Robba, Chiara; Sarwal, Aarti; Sharma, Deepak. Brain Echography in Perioperative Medicine. J Neurosurg Anesthesiol 2021; 33(1).
This editorial reviews the advantages of brain echography, which includes transcranial doppler and B-mode transcranial color-coded duplex ultrasonography. These techniques are non-invasive, safe and low cost and can be used in a variety of settings.
Campbell, D; Diprose, WK; Deng, C; Barber, PA. General Anesthesia Versus Conscious Sedation in Endovascular Thrombectomy for Stroke. J Neurosurg Anesthesiol 2021; 33(1).
This systematic review summarizes the findings of four randomized clinical trials comparing conscious sedation and general anesthesia for endovascular thrombectomy.
Zeiler FA, Ercole A, Cabeleira M, Beqiri E, Zoerle T, Carbonara M, Stocchetti N, Menon DK, Lazaridis C, Smielewski P, Czosnyka M. Patient-specific ICP Epidemiologic Thresholds in Adult Traumatic Brain Injury: A CENTER-TBI Validation Study. J Neurosurg Anesthesiol 2021; 33(1).
This study derived individualized ICP thresholds for patients using the relationship between PRx and ICP. Time spent above the individualized ICP threshold predicted outcome better than an absolute threshold of 20 or 22 mmHg.
Ayrian E, Sugeir SH, Arakelyan A, Arnaudov D, Hsieh PC, Laney JV, Roffey P, Tran TD, Varner CL, Vu K, Zelman V, Liu JC. Impact of a Perioperative Protocol on Length of ICU and Hospital Stay in Complex Spine Surgery. J Neurosurg Anesthesiol 2021; 33(1).
In this before and after study, implementation of a standardized spine surgery protocol reduced total hospital length of stay in high risk spine surgery patients although the rate of complications was similar.
Zierau M, Li D, Lapointe AP, Ip KI, McKinney AM, Thompson A, Puglia MP, Vlisides PE. Cortical Oscillations and Connectivity During Postoperative Recovery. J Neurosurg Anesthesiol 2021; 33(1).
In this pragmatic study on adult surgical patients, the authors reported no correlation with surrogate measures of brain neurodynamics (alpha power and alpha frontal-parietal connectivity) and clinically relevant endpoints of postoperative recovery.
