The William L. Young Neuroscience Research Award

2020 William L. Young Neuroscience Research Award Winner
Michael J. Devinney, Jr., MD, PhD

The William L. Young Neuroscience Research Award provides $5,000 to support research related to the SNACC mission. SNACC members, who are fellows or junior faculty (within six years of initial faculty appointment) at the time of application are eligible. Basic, translational, clinical, or data science projects are all welcome. Thank you for your interest in the William L. Young Neuroscience Award! Be on the lookout for more information in 2021.

Total Contributions as of November 11, 2020: $147,325

Make a gift to the William L. Young Research Award

Following the untimely death of William L. Young, MD, in 2013, the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care agreed to establish an eponymous research award to honor his career and life, particularly his outstanding accomplishments as a clinical and basic-research neuroscientist. Dr Young was a longstanding SNACC member, President of the Society from 1996-1997 and a colleague and friend of many of its members. He was appropriately viewed as one of the most productive researchers, influential mentors and memorable personalities in neuroanesthesiology’s history. The William L. Young Research Award will be presented on a regular cycle and offer support to academic physicians and/or scientists who conduct either clinical or laboratory-based research in neuroanesthesiology or neurologic critical care.

SNACC aims to front load the William L. Young Research Award with a minimum $100,000 and the Society has already committed $50,000 from its reserve funds. Our goal now is to raise an additional $50,000 from our membership and friends. Separately we will be pursuing one-off contributions from groups and institutions independent of SNACC to pump prime the research fund. We will also provide the opportunity for SNACC members to make regular contributions when they renew their annual membership dues.

We now urge all SNACC members to make a one-time gift to the William L. Young Research Award. We have pledges from 100% of current officers and board members to do so. We ask everybody to be as generous as possible and urge long standing members to consider using the following formula to guide their minimum donation. For those who have been SNACC members for more than five years, the Society suggests donating a minimum gift of $25 for each year of membership, i.e. $250 per decade. SNACC will provide a receipt to each donor for tax purposes. SNACC is a 501(c)3 organization, and contributions are tax deductible for US members but tax arrangements may vary in other countries.
