SNACC Teacher of the Year Award Nominating Criteria

 

 

Mission:

To recognize and encourage outstanding teaching of healthcare professionals in the areas of neuroscience, neurosurgical anesthesiology and neuro-critical care


This award recognizes SNACC members who exemplify outstanding teaching of healthcare professionals in the areas of neuroscience, neurosurgical anesthesiology and neuro-critical care.

 Eligibility:

·         Member of SNACC

·         Supporting letter of nomination from Department Chairman and a seconding nomination from any other healthcare professional that has benefited from the teaching skills of the nominated member.

·         Teaching portfolio submitted to SNACC Selection committee (deadline for 2011 is August 15, 2011).

·         Statement of teaching background

·         Description of any formal teaching credentials

·         List of accepted and submitted review articles and book chapters relevant to neuroscience, neurosurgical anesthesiology or neuro-critical care

·         Written evaluations of teaching skills (e.g. evaluations by students)

·         Representative course syllabi

·         Appearance at meeting to receive award

 Selection process:  Recipient of award chosen by SNACC Committee on Teaching Excellence

·         Recognition on the SNACC website with Bio and picture

·         Recognition in the SNACC meeting summary published in JNA 

 

Nomination Information:

To nominate a candidate to SNACC, please provide electronically the following profile information.

  1. Nominator’s Complete Name, Title, and Institution
  2. Nominee’s Complete Name, Title, and Institution
  3. Teaching Credentials:  Please include the expertise and innovation in education, invited lectureships, review course presentations at national and international meetings and their participation in educational activities of national and international societies.
  4. Scientific Publications: Please provide information regarding contribution of new knowledge to the field and the individual’s publication track record.
  5. Administrative Positions:  Please identify any administrative positions in education.
  6. Innovations in Education: Please provide knowledge of development of appropriate course syllabi and/or development of methods for evaluation of effectiveness of teaching methods.
  7. Mentorship:  Please identify the number of medical students, anesthesia residents and fellows
  8. Evaluations from Previous Students: Please include any information regarding effectiveness as a teacher, quality of mentorship, impact on the development of the student’s career, and impact on the productivity of the student (especially peer reviewed publications)
  9. Evaluations from Chair and Colleagues: Please list any comments from the candidate’s previous chairs and colleagues regarding their demonstration of passion for teaching in the area of expertise, verification of contributions to education, research and administration, and demonstration of respect for advisees.
  10. Evaluations from International Colleagues: Please list any comments from the candidate’s international colleagues.
  11. Statement of Teaching Philosophy: Please include acknowledgment of individual differences among students, acknowledgment of differences in learning styles, facilitates effective learning in varied settings, i.e. lectures, morbidity and mortality conferences, quality assurance, group and team based approach to education, and the evaluation of teaching effectiveness.

  3. Supporting letter of nomination from Department Chair
  4. Seconding letter from any other healthcare professional that has benefited from the teaching skills of the nominated member.
